Major Lazer – New Album Preview

It’s about bloody time, if we’re honest. Major Lazer‘s “Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do” is without a doubt one of the best party records of the last couple of years, but for those of us whose lives it has been a big part of, we’re all ready for some new material (the sense of dread on hearing the “Pon De Floor” sample in Beyonce’s latest illustrates this clearly).
Lucky us then, for Diplo and Switch have offered us a teaser of what’s to come on the forthcoming album with their “Major Lazer in Jamaica” video. Between 0.00 and 0.40 there’s a gently strummed reggae lilt which may or may not be the basis for an instrumental, but it’s the kind of thing we could potentially see being beefed up and given a vocal by an R&B sexpot (or perhaps, Nina Sky again). The next track between 0.40 and 1.00 is an upbeat dancehall number with big clunking percussion – straight-up Major Lazer swag basically. Excitingly, 1.00 to 1.15 showcases a track featuring none other than Bow Badman Wiley, repping for the UK and going in hard and grimey. From 1.15 onwards the video is given over to the appearance of Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors who also appeared on Rusko‘s album highlight “Hold On”. This track sounds the most interesting to us; it’s a poppy electronic tropical kinda thing that sounds like it could’ve been given to Rihanna, but Coffman’s vocals give the song a more edgy, alternative feel.
Watch the video below and share in the excitement….
