The Rapture – Sail Away (Aeroplane Remix)

Having highlighted the emergence of all things house as the overriding trend in electronic music in 2011, prepare your ears for one of the first essential remixes of this brand new year.  A remix which, if we’re honest, has slightly surprised us.  Excluding the excellent “How Deep Is Your Love”, The Rapture‘s third album was a slightly disappointing listen – not only did it mark the departure of Mattie Safer, but was also rather light on the indiedisco bangers we have come to expect from the scene-defining group.

One of the few songs to stand out is new single “Sail Away”, a mildly anthemic number characterised by both Luke Jenner’s distinctive vocals and it’s loose, busy production.  The EP carries three remixes.  Cosmic Kids‘ take on the track is fairly standard, housey enough with a hint of disco, but largely forgettable.  Cut Copy‘s take is stronger and more interesting, with a bigger emphasis on piano and whilst pleasant, we can’t help but feel it sounds like The Rapture covering Cut Copy, rather than Cut Copy remixing The Rapture.  That’s to say that strip the vocal away and you’d never know The Rapture had been involved.  All well and good if you’re after some new material from Cut Copy, we suppose…

The remix we’re putting our money on is that by Vito Aeroplane.  Having seemingly fallen by the wayside a little last year (as a result of former partner Stephen Fasano going very successfully solo as The Magician), this remix serves to reinstate his place closer towards the top of the production pile.  Vito’s take on the track is relatively subtle, keeping the vocal squarely at the centre of the track and complementing it with some 4×4 beats, a dosage of cowbell (YES), an additional super melodic top line and some throbbing Lifelike-esque low frequencies.  In these wintry conditions allow this track to warm your cockles and slap a massive grin on your face.
